Join Us for an entertaining, educational, inspiring evening of live storytelling about the challenges surrounding affordable housing in Yuma, looking at the past, present and future.

This is the first in a series of statewide storyteller events meant to inspire local connections and spark solution to a common community challenge. 

HEAR THEIR STORIES:

Bruce Gwynn is a fifth generation Yuman whose great-great grandfather, Jose Maria Redondo, arrived in Yuma in 1858 and his grandfather, EF Sanguinetti, arrived in 1883. Hear the fascinating story of how Yumans lived in Yuma’s early years. 

Edgar Olvera, is a first-time homebuyer who works at Nova Home Loans. Hear about his journey as a millennial buying his first home in Yuma. With rising housing costs, high demand for housing construction, Edgar’s home buying experience is one many people currently looking to become homeowners can relate to.

Local Expert Panel moderated by Julie Engel, President & CEO, GYEDC.

A lively roundtable conversation about Yuma’s unique community housing challenges, and the impact of our seasonal visitors, including winter visitors, military personnel and agricultural workers.

Chris Wheeler is the owner of Prison Hill Brewing Company and a native Yuman. Hear the inspirational

story of his great-grandfather - Yuma Territorial Prison’s Inmate #1032 – and his own experiences as a third generation Yuman.

This event is inspired by Arizona Republic-sponsored evenings of live storytelling that began in 2011 in Phoenix and has since spread to cities nationwide. Around the country, the Storytellers Project has helped more than 6,000 people tell brief, personal stories on stages in front of more than 60,000 people. During the pandemic, the shows were aired online, reaching millions since March 2020.
